For the past couple of weeks, I had a couple of discussions about the said topic with some like-minded people who work in diverse industries with various company sizes. The answers I have received were pretty eye-opening and here I’m planning to share my own opinion about that.
Mainly, it dropped-down to 3 responses.
- It’s a must-have in covid-era
- Good to have, but not a must
- It’s teachable, so not that important
Oppose to those answers, most of them raised their concerns about the possibilities of being stagnated into a single industry and living in some kind of bubble/ comfort zone which makes sense in various ways.
However, here’s my take on this matter.
I believe domain expertise matters if you have more than five years of experience in your job. It can bring some additional super-power for yourself and the company. You will become a subject matter expert eventually and it can directly assist you in climbing the career ladder too. Creativity can open a thousand doors as a mitigation strategy for being squared into one industry.
